Christmas 2021

This year, I decorated a main tree and a bunch of simple little trees... in baskets and urns and buckets and coffee pots... but most of all, I  love this cut tree on the porch: dusted branches with the white feathers of our chickens with simple white clay ornaments that I made. It's Lucy's tree, our indoor rescue cat, who suddenly left us on Thanksgiving weekend; she was twenty and spent five years with us. She loved to watch the Christmas trees, and her new Christmas tray and bowl was already set before she passed on the first day of Advent; which although so tearful, seemed perfection because her name was "light".  Unsuspecting that she would leave so soon, as she seemed healthy except for her arthritic limp,  a few days prior before that sorrow-filled Sunday, I filmed her one evening watching this tree. Her best friend was Scout, who lived on the porch for awhile, our little chicken that could not walk, but suddenly did twelve weeks later.

I am a writer and an artist that does not write much nor show my art, but this essay is a true story, that I wrote a few years ago because it was a miracle. There are miracles all about, so my hope for you and my loved ones is that you see the small miracles in life. I wrote this early May, 2016, but its soul is Christmas.

Thank you for thoughtful people with

gentle words that sip their coffee or tea.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Su

P.S.

Since, I might not write here before the end of the year,  I wanted to mention the most important books that I read this year.

Demons by Fydor Dostoevsky.

The Gulag Archipelago Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

P.S.

If you are interested, last year's Christmas is on Readly this year in Casa Chic Magazine; I took the photos, and did not have to rearrange for someone, so it was fun!

  1. My interventional radiologist recommended the Gulag Archipelago to me just last week! I will read your essay, too. I'm sorry for your loss. Lucy was such a beautiful cat. It's so hard when we lose our fur babies! (((((hugs)))))

    Merry Christmas!

  2. We lost our fur baby Charlotte (chocolate lab) a week before Thanksgiving. Our pets are more like children and give us so much while they are with us. We also give them love, care and a feeling of belonging. Sorry for your loss. My cat, Kala, is 23 and I know eventually I will say farewell to her.

    1. Oh, yes, Kris, you have lost so many, and it doesn't get easier. Lucy was up there on special because she came to us when we most needed her. xoxo

  4. So very sorry for the loss of your fur angel. You gave her a loving and wonderful home. She was a cherished member of your family. Having just lost our little Bichon Fletcher, I can sympathized with your grief. They come into our lives and make an imprint on our hearts forever. Bless you. May your Christmas be filled with wonderful memories of Lucy. XX❤️🎄❄️😢

  6. Sorry about the loss of your cat. Sending hugs. All my pets have passed and I now have two grandchildren who have pet allergies, so I no longer have any cats or dogs. I'm very much a cat person and miss having one so much. (cottagebythepark)

As for your reading recommendations, I just checked out the summaries and they both sound like very relevant-to-our-day readings. It feels like we are at a point again in history where things could go from bad to worse. I hope not and am trying to focus on the positives in our world, but I'm also a realist and do not like some of the happenings in this world currently and really wonder where we are heading.

I hope you have a merry and blessed Christmas. It's going to get cold here in Phoenix! Stay warm with that cute electric stove you have!

    1. That you, Joanie, for your thoughtful response. I'm sorry that you have no pets, but it is wonderful that you have grandchildren. A merry and blessed Christmas to you and yours. You're right! It has been chilly in the days... It took so long to cool down but I don't recall such chilly days. xoxo Su
