After so many years in this area, its like I dread brown, unless it's newer, territorial, or Spanish style. I agree that it is wonderful to have no HOA after all our previous homes having them. Yes, there are some that are not kept up and a little worse for wear than an HOAs, but there were always people in violation that they did nothing about, and it was an added expense each month. I can't wait to see your finished home, of course it will be a work in a progress settling in, but it will be great to be in there! xoox SuButterfly 8)(8 Bungalow https://www.blogger.com/profile/12407401010841427366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1961665810703474647.post-80213744164342570172015-06-15T09:02:48.634-07:002015-06-15T09:02:48.634-07:00I love the green with the blue. I enjoyed seeing the before of your yard. . .it gives me hope with our new space. I think a neighborhood without HOA is delightful. We live in a little town with no covenants or restrictions and yes, there are those who have let their homes go, but for the most part the houses are delightful. Especially in summer with all the pretty porches and flowers. The gold/yellow does well when it is hot, and the purple thrives in all the cooler months,. But they basically bloom most of the year regardless, it's just one gets more robust depending on the weather. The purple lantana seems to latch on to things and grow up into it giving a nice effect. It is growing into a hopseed bush that was trained into a tree. The purple sage might be chihuahuan sage; it came up from the ground, and apparently it was here before. It has not regained its more wild look, I think because it was so severely cut down or it is a completely different sage. It blooms purple almost every time there is some moisture in the air. There is a potato bush with purple flowers too, and it prefers to be under something. There is a bouganvilla, but its messy. The Mexican bird of paradise does well too with orange and yellow flowers; I have one in the back that is quite large. The purple grass is a type of rubrum that doesn't seed; it gets cut twice a year, sometimes 3x. My spouse cuts it, and it is a lot of cleanup, but it doesn't spread by itself, and it looks pretty most of the year. Some do spread. There is a green kind that showed up in the yard as a volunteer; it spreads, and it is not my favorite, because it doesn't change color. This one looks pink with green, to purple, to cranberry (especially in the fall). Once established it doesn't take a lot of water. It is best if the grass doesn't spread, if you can find it. If you want more once they are established you can cut them and split them, which I know you are familiar with. I haven't been able to grow it here, but it grew well at my last house: blue hibiscus. It's not a hibiscus, and it is purple, but if you have some shade it does well in the heat and without a lot of water. Thank you so much, Jen.

ReplyDeleteButterfly 8)(8 Bungalow https://www.blogger.com/profile/12407401010841427366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1961665810703474647.post-49445894901888446942015-05-31T19:33:35.605-07:002015-05-31T19:33:35.605-07:00Thank you, Jen. xoxo I read somewhere that a gree...Thank you, Jen. xoxo I read somewhere that a green door is suppose to be lucky and good for finances. :) In the front are lantana, because they are ground cover, so they are the shortest. I am thinking of painting my front door a sage green. But, my husband doesn't like the idea. Everyone's doors are dark brown. Bland, boring, dull. I completely agree with cacti in front of the house. I have some agave my neighbors gave me, but I'm thinking of putting them in the back with the others. In your front cottage garden, is there rockrose? Lantana? I think I see those plants. What do you recommend? Also, the grasses are beautiful. I may plant some in my front garden since I have taken out almost all of the grass now. You have done an incredible job restoring your home. I wish I could see it in person! xoxoxoxoxxo JenAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07420524123565812135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1961665810703474647.post-28910485443874901322015-05-31T09:47:28.849-07:002015-05-31T09:47:28.849-07:00Thank you, Rue. But on the front, I so admired the people that went pink that I wanted to take a chance too. It really cheers it up. You know most homes are a dreary brown here, and it does make sense if it is a desert style house or Spanish, but these are not, and they look sad in brown. Not that I put stock in it, but it is sort of funny, but no one can tell, because the yard is walled and there are no two story homes! :) I do love the white side, and I think it is so perfect for the garden in the back to take center stage, and I think color would have been distracting to my senses and the plants. In the front, I wanted to cheer up the neighborhood like the pink house. And l agree that it does look beachy; my California years are showing, since I've lived nearly half my life there, and half here except for some shorter periods elsewhere. Definitely a dual personality between two places! :) And you are correct, a few neighbors have been by to say they love it. :) Always so nice visiting. Have a beautiful, creative week, Dore. xoxo SuButterfly 8)(8 Bungalow https://www.blogger.com/profile/12407401010841427366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1961665810703474647.post-80175563785765321392015-05-26T23:36:48.736-07:002015-05-26T23:36:48.736-07:00Your house looks beautiful, you have done so much ...Your house looks beautiful, you have done so much to transform it from the before photos.
