Do your teens have a collection? Or vinyls?
My daughter has a collection of Petshops and
My Little Ponies that she has acquired over time.
Over the years the problem has been how to display it.
In her vintage display case they looked too small, so back they went into a basket where the cats got them and yanked some apart and the poodles chewed them.
Then about a year ago or so, we went to Ikea looking for a way to display them, and we left with the Mosslanda. At the time, these ledges were 3.99 or 4.99 a piece. Now they are a bit more, but compared to PB or other makers these still are a bargain. Plus they are easy to install, because there are screw holes. No trying to figure out the back holes and where to line them up. All you need is a screwdriver and a level as long as they hold in your type of particular wall. We chose to put them on the one drywall spot in the house; it is a closet that at some point was added to this house.
This is our before. The white does not do the collection justice. So we removed the ledges from the wall and took them out to the backyard, and she placed them on some cardboard and painted.
Here they are now. The shelves were painted with a Rustoleum's Metallic Gold, and now they look like metal, which gives them a modern edge. (The cat art is available at Fab Funky or a unique shop. A unique shop is where she found this one. She has had it a while, but recently we saw the creator's shop featured in a magazine.)
These shelves can actually display items up to 17 3/4 inches. They also have a groove to hold plates or frames, but we think they are great for collectibles. Since they are only 4 3/4 width, we were able to place them behind a door.
So that's it.
I hope you are enjoying your week.
If you have any questions, you can ask in the comments.

DeleteI love it how your support your dd's interests so fully, and in such thoughtful, creative ways. She is very lucky indeed.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sarah, for all these years of friendship. xoxo Su
DeleteGenius idea! Oh boy could we use this solution and the colors are super elegant! Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kim. She has had them up for a year, and really enjoys the collection. She rearranges it too, so she has not had an issue dusting as someone asked. Vinyls don't really get dusty do they? :) I've never noticed an issue like on my bookshelves or the piano. xoxo Su
DeleteShe really has a wonderful collection and it is displayed so nice. You can see them all.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the rest of your week.
Mary
Thank you, Mary. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su
DeleteHow cute! IKea has so many products that you can paint or use for other than it was intended for. I can see the kitties and dogs wanting to play and chew on them, like my daughter's beanie babies:)
ReplyDeleteKathleen in Az
Thank you, Kathleen. Oh the dogs would destroy a beanie baby! I agree. If you can't solve a problem take a walk through Ikea. xoxo Su
DeleteI have those shelves and used them for books when my girls were little. I love the gold!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I've seen them used that way, and they look so attractive with children's books. xoxo Su
DeleteDearest Su they are so perfect in Gold to recall and revisit Golden memories of not such a distant childhood. The display wall touched my heart, very, very sweet and precious collection.
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Vera
Thank you, Vera, for so sweet a comment. She really enjoys setting up her rainbow of color. xoxo Su

DeleteSu, this post is a godsend. I have been looking for a way to display the dated plates that are a part of my Christmas dishes. I want to be able to put them out only at Christmas. I have some of those photo shelves but they don't have the plate groove and have kind of a slick finish so I never really felt comfortable loading it up with plates. I am thinking that I might be able to use these shelves in a kind of a bookcase that I can bring out when I want to use it and tuck it away after. Your daughter's collection is beautifully displayed, the gold and black is very elegant as well as showing off the collection to its best advantage. The petshops and ponies bring back memories from when my now grown daughters had a few pieces.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lorri. Your arrangement sounds like a good idea. My daughter never enjoyed dolls like I did when I was young. Now, these characters are collectible. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su
DeleteThe shelves are absolutely perfect for your daughter's lovely collection. And the gold made everything pop. You have such a vision, my friend, and you inspire many.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you!
Thank you, Stephanie. I have to say it was my daughter's idea to display them, and she loves looking at them. xoxo Su
DeleteA good idea for the collections. She sure has a lot of those ponies!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rose. Ponies and the cats are her favorites. xoxo Su
DeleteThis is a perfect solution for showcasing your daughter's collection and keeping them organized--love the gold! I've been using that same spray paint myself lately.
ReplyDeleteThank you, for stopping by and leaving a sweet message. I agree on your choice of color, this finish comes out really nice. I've tried several others for projects like copper and hammered gold, and they have come out real nice. The copper is in my garden and has held up really well. xoxo Su
DeleteHi Sue, your daughter has a darling collection and the way you are showcasing them looks great. Love the gold too. Ikea really has some great solutions.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend. xo
Thank you, CM. Ikea does. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su

Thank you, Alessandra. It's my daughter that is organized. :) xoxo Su
DeleteHmmm...IKEA is SO close to my house, I may need to purchase a couple of those for my OWN silly collection of Shopkins!! I love the color changes and how beautifully the pieces come to life. Blessings, Cindy xo
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cindy. I would have never known that you collect Shopkins. They are adorable! They do look pretty, like a rainbow. xoxo Su
DeleteWhat a wonderful collection !
ReplyDeleteOn these lovely shelves it shows all its cuteness, GREAT !
May the end of your week be blessed with joy
sending much love to you
Dany
Thank you, so much Daniela. Her shelves really are a rainbow of cuteness. xoxo Su
DeleteWhat a bright spot of color. It is lovely that you've found such a great way to display your daughter's collection and that she keeps it so neat and tidy. But how on earth do you dust it?
ReplyDeleteAmalia
xo
Thank you, Amalia. My daughter came up with this idea, but she rearranges them, because she also enjoys photography. In fact, when she put them back up the arrangement was so similar to the before, because there is really a system to it. She has had them up for a year, and come to think of it, the shelves are in a good spot, because they really don't get dusty. Yet, I know that I have an inch of dust on the shelves in the living room, piano etc.... I think the amount of dust somewhat depends on where the air conditioning vents are. Certain spots are worse than others. xoxo Su
DeleteSu, the shelves look wonderful and I do love that dark color on the wall. It goes perfectly with the shelves. It's amazing how a little bit of paint can totally change a look! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Benita. I agree. Paint is inexpensive and can be easily changed with a bit of labor. xoxo Su
DeleteThank you, Benita. I agree. Paint is inexpensive and can be easily changed with a bit of labor. xoxo Su
DeleteA beautiful and creative way to display your daughter's wonderful collections! I'm sure it makes her smile every time she sees it! xx Karen
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen. She really loves that she painted them gold. xoox Su
DeleteGreat idea.
ReplyDeleteFor my boys, we have Lego builds. We also used shelving to put the Lego builds up so our cats can not get a hold of them.
I love the black and gold.
Carla
Those would look magnificent on shelves too. My daughter has legos also, but the masculine ones, because the girls' are easy and pink. We have not displayed them, but she has them out in her cottage... Chima series?? xoxo Su
DeleteIdeal for creating displays for smalls - great color choice.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Donna. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su
DeleteI love how IKEA so often has a logical and inexpensive solution to design challenges. I like the colour your daughter chose - a bit edgy and great with the cuteness of the items displayed.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I agree about IKEA. Have a wonderful weekend. xoxo Su
DeleteWhat a fun collection and the shelves worked great! My youngest had a collection of McDonalds happy meal toys. We stored them in a bushel basket and she would play with them for hours. Now my grands play with them. We call it the 'basket of toys'
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Thank you, Jan. Over the years McDonalds had some great toys like the mini American Girl Dolls and PetShops. xoox Su
DeleteI agree with the others.
ReplyDeleteThe idea to paint them gold was brilliant!
I really love it!
xo
Thank you, Cindi. Have a wonderful week. xoxo Su
DeleteWhat a great idea, and such a clever way to contain that fantastic collection!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Judy. Have a wonderful leap day. xoxo Su
DeleteThat's such a great solution for the little collectibles. My daughter used to like the Littlest Pet Shop and we still have some of them - so cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you, JoAnne. My daughter has collected these two brands for awhile, and some are quite a bit older than she is, but it is really the only toy she ever enjoyed. xoxo Su
DeleteWhat a sweet way to honor a childhood collection :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do that with my daughter's stuffed animals somehow, but she has more of those than she has wall space LOL
xoxo,
rue
Thank you, Rue. That's so cute. :) xoxo Su
DeleteThis idea is perfect for my son's hot wheel collection.
ReplyDeleteMake sure you link up this gem on Thoughts of Home on Thursday because it has such great info.
Thank you, Laura. xoxo Su
