Color of the Day

I took a decor style quiz that my daughter found online; she actually found several, but I thought Sproost's was the best, because it had the most images to select from.  According to Sproost, my style is 100% French Eclectic.  I think it was pretty accurate, but my bedroom is the least French country room in the house.  Try it, and tell me your style.

Two years ago in a remodel rush, I made the mistake of
trying to fit everything from the former master into this small room.
It became the most neglected room in the house; clothes piled on chairs, and paper filled baskets, not a sanctuary.

At this point, one might need a cup of tea or if it is late, a drink.

Last week, I decided to paint the room, because I thought the color was wrong. But three samples later, two trips to the paint store, and paint patches all over the wall: charcoal, white, and blue, I decided the room should remain SW bamboo shoot, and painted the patches;
I decided green looks pretty with dark wood :)

Since painting didn't work, and my spouse was home, the room could be rearranged.
He removed the oversized French chairs and a large heavy looking mirror over the painted chest. In place of the large mirror he hung a smaller, gold, wooden mirror with roses that I found at a second hand store.
So much lighter already!

The bed only fits under the main window, but I had him move the giant armoire from the center wall to the right side of the bed.  Wow!  It opened and balanced the room. Progress!

He then moved the bureau that was on the right side of the bed to the wall opposite the armoire.  My last home had nichos, or niches in the walls for a meditation piece. I missed not having an altar, so that's what the smaller dresser became.

Then one day this week, I was purchasing some grocery items from World Market when I spotted velvet curtains on clearance in the perfect shade of green!
I was so delighted that I forgot to consider length; I bought four at 96 inches.

At home my spouse said they were too long.  (He thought I wanted to hang them directly over the window, but come to think of it, we actually never discussed where I was going to hang them from.) So without thinking, I took back all four, but could only find three 84, so I kept one 96, because one could never tell if the curtain was too long if it was behind the bed.

Now again home, I removed the curtains from the package, and immediately realized I needed 96 if I was going to hang them from the ceiling!!! My husband returned to the store for me to return three 84, but now there were only two 96, so he decided not to return them and came home with five curtains.

Crazy.

While he was out, I decided that when he returns I should put two 84's behind the bed, because it will look part of the canopy, and hang the longer pair on the other window!  Fortunately unbeknown to me, he did not return the 84s!

Now, I understand why I have not touched this room for two years!

We replaced the bedskirt and two euro sham covers with a white, linen ruffle, and I put curtains back on the canopy.

Lastly, the art was rearranged.

My spouse and I are pleased.

Francis is wearing the color of the day.

The nesting tables are in front of one side of the armoire, so there would be a place for a glass of water at night.  I use the armoire for storage, but I don't need access often; these tables are lightweight and are moved effortlessly.

  2. The bedroom looks great. I love your magnificent bed. You must feel like a princess sleeping in that! I have to laugh, I took the quiz four times and they still couldn't work out my style! That's because my style is hippy sea cottage (bach or summer house made from recycled wood) and a fancy website like that wouldn't even consider those things stylish! :-)

  5. It looks very pretty and relaxing, Su! I know well the feeling of not having your master bedroom the way you would like it. I did have it the way I wanted, but then my husband wanted to go to a King size when we were mattress shopping. That messed up all the decorating and our bed that I had done with our Queen mattress. I'm still not as happy as I was with it, but I live with it right now.

    1. A king is much harder to decorate! It took me a long time, because I am more emotionally involved in my own space then in a shared common room. xoxo

  14. Quite the runaround, but the result is magazine-worthy gorgeous, Su! The green you chose is lovely.

Thanks for popping by my little blog. Long story long... my mom wanted all of us to learn an instrument, and in the 3rd grade the band teacher told me I should play the clarinet ~ so it wasn't my choice. In Jr. High, I started studying w/ a private teacher and in H.S. I studied with a clarinetist from the Denver Symphony. All State Orchestra & Band, special summer music programs, challenges, TV appearances - it all just mushroomed. I loved music, and it influenced my life in so many wonderful ways, but when it came to Curtis I put the brakes on. I didn't want a career in music. I wanted to study art! :)

Hope you have a lovely one,
    Lin

  19. A lovely master bedroom and well worth the trouble to get it just as you want it. I'm a minimalist at heart when it comes to room decor and I'm more relaxed in our Italian home for that very reason. However, our English home is smaller and holds all the eclectic furniture and things I've inherited and, therefore, love.

    1. Oh yes, Linda. If I had another tiny place, it would be lighter. I once did, and it was lots of white and aqua, or sort of Ikea style. I think that is wonderful that your two places have different styles and vibes. xoxo

  44. Ah, the trials and tribulations of decorating! Everyone makes it look so easy at the link parties (here's my pretty room), we forget all the running, returning, change of mind, etc. The process is actually half the fun, but it can be frustrating, I know. It sounds like you have a very involved and patient partner! That can make all the difference! I love your room, it turned out well. My bedroom is green and I have white bedding too!
